Marry Ann Most new fire place system require outside combustion air by code the system I installed last I am a Design/build Contractor in NM had the combustion air supplied thought the flue it was a triple wall set up and the air came down the inside of the outside flue and cooled it in also and was connected to the frame of the fireplace and was routed to vents down low so the outside air makes it draw. If you have a newer home there is not a enough air leaks to support the air to burn the fire place and you donít want that as it pulls cold air right in to you home and the heat goís up the flue. Hope this helps
