I was at the first ever KCBS Banquet that wasn't a pot luck in the early 90's. It was a plated prime rib dinner cooked by Fast Eddy and served by the caterer at some hall in North KC. Hardly a high end event but there was a local faction that just didn't want anything to change and the argument was the same. A group of local cooks were allowed to show up after dinner to buy raffle tickets and attend the awards. They brought coolers of beer and IMO it was pretty disrespectful to the folks that were in for the whole event.
It's funny to see this come back around so many years later. It was a big issue afterwards and the original KCBS banquet and trade show was a one off event that stayed dead for about 10 years. The following year I went to a pot luck banquet in Blue Springs where I was fed 2 back ribs for $2 and I brought a cooler of beer.
