When I designed my "bbq" (stick burner)I didn't know about this forum. What I did know was that I wanted a smoker that I could also grill on. Didn't work out that way. What I did was go to a couple of bbq joints that used Klose pits for catering. No, they didn't cook on them, they were for show and keeping food warm. My design is a well tuned 24x60 main chamber with a 24x24x48 warming oven trailer mounted. In front of this unit I have mounted an FEC 100. This setup allows me to cook for am H--l of a lot of people.
Look at other designs, decide what you want, and go for it. Might also Google 'cyclops smoker for some ideas.
