I put 4 3/4 holes in the bottom of mine and wide open it was the perfect temp. I did collect a bunch of fridge magnets to close them off if necessary but rarely used them.
Snail, the guy in KC who has designed and cooked on barrels for a whole lotta years once told me that one one if his first barrels he had no holes in the bottem just a wedge shaped stick that he kept the lid propped open with...more it was propped open the more O2 he got to the fire.....
