I once heard that *some* magnets were pretty nasty and would be considered 'ground polluting' if disposed of the wrong way - that remark was probably made in reference to neodinium magnets.

Not sure how to tell the difference between different material magnets, but I don't think I'd want to subject any magnet on one of my smokers to a high heat melting situation if the food could be contaminated. I'm not trying to be 'alarmist', but just trying to give you an inkling of what you might be dealing with so you can judge for yourself how and where to use magnets around a smoker.
