According to what we were told from our reps it was a meat contest, not a sauce contest. Your entry should make a judge say wow I would spend money to buy this.
Cooking simple bbq over wood with maybe a little sauce to compliment it doesn't get any easier. However, when you invest hours to trim, part, marinate inject and so on, is more work, not easier, and it sure isn't better. Maybe different, but not better.
