Go mentor with an existing team and get the feel for it, before you do your first one. Someone will help you out there. Then you will have an idea of where you are and where you need/want to be. It might be an "eye opener", or maybe not. I plan for a minimum of $450 per contest, and I've only been doing it for 10 years. Some events are more, but none are less than $300. (and I don't buy $150 briskets)
Your mileage may very. Equipment, travel expenses, entry fees, comp meats and garnish stuff, meals for two days, adult beverages, and all the etc.
