If y'all want to really get back to what BBQ once was how about using team expenses over a few events then get an average for costs to do one event and make that the payout to the GC with a sliding scale down the line.
Many say they're not in it for the money and if they can break even that's fine. It's also been said many times that the big dollars have changed things (not for the better) so what if you removed the big dollars?
That would lower organizer costs and the need for huge sponsors which should in turn lower entry fees which I'd bet would make many happy and attract more newbies to the world of BBQ.
Take it back to what it once was, a bunch of people trying to create the best food possible,having a great time and hopefully on a good weekend earn the label "Top BBQ'er" instead of becoming a mad scientist using heaven knows what chemicals and technology that'd make Alton Brown blush all to get that big prize payout.
I think if this was done it'd take out those who are less interested in the creation of excellence and more interested in the possible rewards.
Would that be possible?
