I know of no firm data that has the answers your looking for and we have never asked for it here. But I am going to run a poll to get some of the answers. I personally believe the Pareto principal better know as the 80/20 rule contains some of the answers. The 80/20 rule states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. I used to sell insurance and we knew that 80% of the agents income came from 20% of the agents. Only 20% of the agents were willing to do what was necessary to earn that kind of income. In addition to that upper 20% it could further be broke down to another 80/20 rule. So I would not be surprised if it turned out that only 1 or 2% of the people who complete in BBQ contests earn 50,000 net or more from the contests alone.
