I'm a dedicated outdoor griller and do love a good charcoal cooked burger. However, the best burgers in the whole wide world are cooked on a flattop at high temp so that all the juices get locked in and the outside of the patty is caramelized and just a wee bit crunchy. To do this properly you need commercial equipment (griddle and vent hood) -- I've done it at home a few times and it sure does smell up the house!
