I've also seen it in the owners manual.
I always thought it was because of the longstanding relationship between Weber and Kingsford.
Both lump & Briqu's have always worked well for me and I can't imagine wearing out any Weber product besides grates.
I guess you could damage one if you tried to burn logs in one though.
