Bruce B,

Not quite, almost though; they recommend not using lump or "heat beads" but don't indicate why. In the paragraph that follows their mention of lump they mention not using charcoal imprego'd with lighter fluid but even there they don't mention damage to the cooker, only possible injuries and fires.

From the Smokey Mountain Cooker Smoker Oowner's Guide at http://www.homedepot.com/catalog/pdfImages/64/64bd09d4-0daa-49ec-b8ab-e38b4df95d30.pdf on page 10:

Weber recommends the use of charcoal briquettes
(A) with your Weber˘ç Smokey Mountain Cooker smoker. Lump
charcoal or heat beads are not recommended.

Never use charcoal impregnated with charcoal lighter
fluid. Failure to follow this warning may result in
serious bodily injury, death, or fire, causing damage to
property.
