By some definitions - millions of people's, in fact - grilling a hot dog is barbecuing. But, by KCBS definition, a hot dog breaks the rules and is not barbecue. And, FWIW, we got our butts handed to us in NKC last month because we don't turn in slathered and candied meat. We had fun and liked our food, so it was a success. For us.

But yeah, fine: If the competition world honestly believes that the biggest problem with contests is that judges like more sauce than the cooks do, then cooks need to lobby the KCBS and have it outlawed. If the majority agrees that "preservation" means not changing flavors or styles, than absolutely: eliminate sauce. Because that's where the old ways have been lost. With sauce.
