Because i don't let my perceived personal preference affect my attitude toward judging. I knew when I signed up for anything butt that I don't eat that item cooked, but kept an open mind that I could judge it fairly. I didn't approach it with the attitude of since I don't like this to start with, I can't give it good scores. one entry upon looking at how it was presented my initial thought was oh this can't be good, the two ingredients to my mind was not good together. But to my surprise it was very good, and the two complimented each other in balance and harmony.
I think alot depends on the judges perspective and attitude. I don't just judge based on 1 bite. I really try to evaluate each entry based on how the cook presented it and it may take several tastes to be fair.
