Ok, I give up. No one can explain to me how saying what a rib "should" taste like isn't defining flavors. "Disgusting sweet" to one person is delicious to another. I'm comfortable with letting the judges decide for themselves what's good, but apparently I'm in the minority.
I respect your opinions, but mine is that the most important tradition lost is not simple in favor of allegedly over-powering flavors - it's technique. The skill of the pi master. We still smoke everything but chicken on a homemade smoker. It takes skill to control the fire, not a computer. BTW, chicken goes on an Egg, and the only thing that goes in muffin pans is muffins. I never have understood that mess.
A lot of people have also lost the best reason to compete, or never did really get it. From the very beginning, Gremlin Grill competed for fun, "and for glory," not that we ever got much. But that means turning in what we like, not what necessarily will get us what most people compete for today: money.
