KCBS used to tell us to make sure there wasn't any sauce on the lid etc because the judges would score down, now the judges are told to ignore if a little sauce on the lid. So how it it any different to instruct judges that just because a team submits an entry where all the pieces aren't exactly identical that is reason to score down? What it appears by the scoring is that judges are expecting and requiring all boxes to look the same, and if yours doesn't it won't score well. That is not judging an entry on how the team presented it.
Take pork, if a box has a sliced money muscle and fingers and it looks nice and the judge finds it appealing judge it accordingly. If the next entry is a box of pulled pork and it looks really nice, should a judge score it based on being a appealing box of pulled pork, or based on not having sliced money muscle because that is the judges personal preference?
Or should a judge score based on are any of the rules broken and how did the team present it? Should the judge look at a box of pulled pork and say as pulled pork it is a good looking box, nicely arranged, moist looking, outstanding color and give it a good score. Or should the judge say well, it looks nice, but the team didn't include any sliced or fingers so it doesn't get a good score? The 2 entries are different, different doesn't mean they aren't as equally nicely presented in their different way. From the scoring results of not just our team but plenty of others as well it doesn't appear to the way the judges are scoring.
