I don't know if cheating is going on or not, but I can tell you with 100% certainty that it IS possible to cheat. All you would need is one judge that is your inside man/woman. That judge knows what your box looks like (easy enough). He/she scores yours high, and scores everybody else down. Just think about it... one judge can knock 24 teams right out of the contest very easily. Two can wipe out all your competitors in most contests if at different tables. And there's absolutely no way to prevent this from happening and it's as simple as pie.
I see judges visiting teams after contests all the time and I hear them say "I got your ribs box". Competitors even whip out their smartphone and show them a pic of their box to confirm. Not saying they were cheating, but it sure does give you a funny feeling.
The box distributor can cheat easily too - just by distributing boxes to known low or high scoring tables. Hell, I've even seen contests set up where the box turn-in is in plain sight of the judges. They can watch the box go from the turn-in table straight to the judging table and keep their eye on it the whole time.
But of course, all BBQ judges are honest and this is the only sport in the world where cheating is not going on.
