Wood Question

A friend of mine has a bunch of split logs he would like to give me. The logs have been kept dry and under a tarp for around a year. My question is, since the wood has been stored for over a year, is it ok to cook food with or is it best suited for a fireplace?

I hate to ask a silly question, but I'd rather do so and be safe.
