I don't know anything about promoting a contest. However, if I had this problem I would try to figure out something I could add to the event that would be a draw instead of prize money. Then I would look at the demographics of who attended over the last couple of years. If a very large number of attendees were locals that would probably be good. You would need to factor in if there was any competition for the event at that date. Then I would try to figure if I could afford the risk. Of course these are just some of the reasons I would never try to be a barbecue promoter.
