My take:

80 teams at 250 each is $20K. Paying out 10K for such an event is too low a percentage and would be offensive to many teams. Personally, I would not sign up my team for such a contest.

On the other hand, a $10K payout for a 50 team contest is very reasonable, especially if you spread the cash out beyond the minimum KCBS requirements. Some people also prefer the mid-sized events to the big ones. If you can live with a turnout of 40-50 teams I would go ahead and try it.

I am a contest organizer as well as a cook and judge.
