I have been and probably will always be a member of KCBS. Though out my life personal and business I have always been members of organizations that I had interests in be it business or pleasure. At times I have been just a member and at other times I have be been on the administrative side. The first one I joined was the Kansas City Archery Club. I was about eighteen and in a couple of years I was elected the president of the club. I was just taught that part of being a success involved being a member of such organizations.
I hate to hear it when people say that because the don't agree with everything KCBS says and does that they won't be a member. The dues for KCBS is a small amount of money and being a member gives you the right to praise, complain and if you want, get involved in it to make changes in it. At times KCBS has been very good to me and at times I feel it has really treated me wrong. But, I still need to pay my dues, because I am involved in barbecue. Speaking of the cost of the dues I don't think you charge enough. I think members should be able to compete in contests as part of their $35.00 and non members should have to pay $50 per contest. That's probably not possible but it sound like a good idea to me.
Now as far as secrecy goes some of it is good for everyone. Sometimes in order to have any organization run smoothly the members do not need to know everything that is going on all the time. But having the power to withhold information from the members has responsibility and if that trust is violated then the offending officials need to be removed from office.
