So...the poll question about new judges brings up an interesting point. The food cooked at the classes is usually not up to par with the best entries in a contest. It can't be, as the cook is usually cooking for 20 plus judges instead of 6.
Fast forward to the contest. There is a table with 3 new judges...maybe more. The new judges eat entry number 1. It is the best BBQ the judges have ever tasted. They write down 9s. Then the entries get better from there. But the score can't be changed. The teams on that table end up with 5 of the top ten calls.
Idea for next poll! Should judges (especially new ones) be able to go back and adjust their scores once they try an entry that stomps the 999 they just tried into the ground?
Cool poll! Keep it goin' Ray!
