Another thing I found that really helps with fire control with units like those is taking the charcoal grate and turning it 90 degrees which raises it up allowing ash to fall below the fire and not choking the fire out as it tries to get oxygen. Also might need to add a second grate with it to take up any gaps. When you turn and raise the grate you'll end up with open area that needs covered unless the grate is square which makes turning it useless. Keep exhaust open all the time and adjust temp just by opening intake vent on fire box. Usually making smaller adjustments instead of radical ones gives better results when controlling fires. Let them start slower so they don't get away from you:)
