Reducing/Filtering Smoke

Hi,

I live in New York City, and am trying to smoke without the fire dept showing up (as they did for my first time). Does anyone have good recommendations on reducing the amount of smoke produced by my Char Griller Outlaw/Side Fire Box? I've heard anecdotally that you can use PVC pipe to redirect a lot of the smoke through a filter, but can't find any more info on it. I also had quite a bit of smoke escaping from the firebox. I am considering just drastically reducing the amount of hickory i use and use more lump charcoal to keep the heat up, but will obviously lose out on as smoky of a flavor.
