Congrats on making a change for yourself. Many people talk, not many act on it. That said, I don't know what you were doing before, but the food industry might make you hate your life again. Depending on where you live, the degree might help, it won't hurt, but be aware that it might not do anything for you. It should give you a good foundation.

I've been in the industry for 12 years now. BBQ is my love, and opening up a restaurant is my goal. I've run places, and worked in places ranging from pizza, BBQ, private clubs, and fine dining. You get what you put into it, every place I've worked at has helped shape my ideas, and management skills. When it comes to the food industry in this country, nothing beats on the job training.

Because your goal is to have your own catering company, I would focus on business classes, and work in a restaurant to gain food experience.
