Matt,
I have enjoyed my 'Maverick ET-73'...if it is still available, you should be able to find it by clicking on the Amazon site that Ray provides here.

The ET-73 has been accurate enough for smoking (plenty accurate), durable enough (provided you are careful not to get water in the cable between the probes and the unit (especially where the cable enters the probe), and regarding distance, I have only used mine at about a 50 distance, but have done so without any problem.
Also, the probe and cable have a max service temp of about 400*F before the heat does strange stuff to the cable.

Additional note...The ET-73 allows itself to be set at any temperature YOU wish...some thermometers only allow themselves to be set per specific species of meat I find limiting, so being able to set it per my opinion of what 'done' is is important.

The ET-73 is a stand alone thermometer that is not connectable to any other devices (which is fine with me)
