In my case using the ice created another problem. I am one of these people that is very worried about germs. So I had to buy ice that was in a sealed bag and at least claimed it was pure. After getting through that I needed to compensate for the added water from the melting ice so I added extra salt and more honey.
Knowing me I am sure that using the gel packs, even in zip lock bags, would cause me to worry about the chemicals in the gel packs leaking into the food. Yes I am a bit excessive compulsive when it comes to food handling, that's all I will admit to.
