Got back from a 667 mile 1way drive to attend King of the Smokers yesterday and meet the top competitors from around the nation. Had a great time, tasted great food, and everybody was so gracious and nice. A few cookers I interacted with went above and beyond:
Chris Lilly: posed for pics with us bbq nerds and signed his book. Said he has a new one coming out in May. Must buy!
Rod Gray: Posed for pics and tasted his delish brisket. Surprised he didn't walk with that. When I asked if he had any sauces for sale, he just handed me his brisket sauce. What a gracious and generous guy!
Mike Wozniak (Quau): Great food followed up with showing us his cookers and how he modded the Akorn to hold a rotisserie for chicken. Then after I told him we met in the BBQ Championship Series in Reno, shared a few tips and tricks in ribs that made me say, "Huh?!!!? Really?" Not the least of which is the trend away from foiling. Thanks, Mike! Gonna experiment this weekend. I know our ribs have done worse and worse so it's time to try something new...
Sterling (Big Poppa Smokers): Not only hosted a great event but even shared how he used his rubs to win the Royal (layering flavors). All of his employees were great too.
Bottom line: Well worth the 10 hour drive. Great time had by all I believe.
