Many years ago cooked backyard just to see what it was like -- got me hooked!. Enjoyed it a lot because of lower pressure and limited range -- cooked chicken, ribs and pork butt.
It varies by contest organizer but most backyard sections have lower entry fees but still use certified judges. I've judged backyard many times now and find it interesting because there will be some excellent entries along with a few head scratchers.
Recommendation: Give it a shot, but have a talk with a few experienced cooks first to give you an orientation on the basics.
