Thank you everyone, I figured there had to be at least one person here who had blown the door off a pit one way or another. This was actually a very serious incident. The noise was loud and the door fitting is quite heavy. It blew a foot off the wall both sides.

The most interesting thing about it, aside that it can actually happen, is that nothing from the fire came out in the blast. Not an ash, not a log, not an ember. The flue is not perfect, so I am thinking perhaps the pressure on one side built up but the side where it was hotter had updraft? Or the blast caused an immediate updraft to keep the ashes etc in place? Crazy and yes very scary, so lucky. Need a complete inspection plus replacement of the doors. Thanks again. Mary Ann
