We used a commercial sauce in 2007, our first year of competition cooking.
In the off-season between 2007 & 2008, we created two sauces and have used them quite successfully every since. We make all our own rubs too.
The idea that you need to use a commercial sauce and/or rub in order to win is totally untrue. Nothing wrong with doing so but it isn't necessary.
