Whiskey-Infused Pork May Come to a Restaurant Near You
Some may choose to drink their whiskey while enjoying a meal of barbecued pork.
But now a distiller is trying to put the two flavors into one compact bite.
According to WQAD, Keith Kerkhoff, owner of the Templeton Rye Distillery in Templeton, Iowa, has partnered with a farm to raise pigs that will hopefully taste like his prohibition-era whiskey.
Twenty-five Duroc pigs born in January are being raised on feed treated with the whiskey.
With the help of Nick Berry, who holds a Ph.D. in Animal Science, the two hope to produce pigs that will take on the nuanced flavor of the rye whiskey.
If that concept is hard to grasp, just think of sheep that graze on truffles or cows that munch on grass — what these animals eat tends to lend flavor to the actual meat before it hits your plate.
