I think educating the judges could be improved. Keeping in mind that most judges don't cook bbq, or cook at all. Too much is left up to the judges "Expectations" which may include expecting bite through(like fried chicken) skin. Judges ot understanding that not all racks of ribs are straight, so you might get an entry where the ribs aren't straight.
You get things like judges dinging a team because no burnt ends were in the box(the judges expectations) What rule was broken? Where in the rules does it say that burnt ends have to be in the box?
It doesn't. The rules state that there has to be enough for 6 judges to be able to sample. The judges are taught to judge the entry based on the way the team submitted it.
The judge has way of knowing why a team didn't include burnt ends. Maybe the burnt ends were too tender, or too tough, or the team dropped them on the ground. There could be very good reasons a tema didn't include them.
But the team doesn't have to and should not be dinged if they don't!
