Let me chime in here, although late for this weekend cooks. After cooking competitively for 20 years, I have retired and am enjoying the opportunity to now continue judging contests.
I personally, as a cook and a judge, don't feel that 7,8,and 9 scores require comments. After all, they are considered better than average.
Judging this past weekend, the reps did mention the cards, and let me tell you they were used. For the most part they were being used to assist the contestant in bringing his entries to a level above a 6. One category at our table needed comment cards for 4 of the six samples we received, and all judges used them, although they all repeated the same comments. This took so long, that the reps were calling table captains for the next category before all the judges cards were turned in. For what I have seen, the comment cards are getting better use, and being used to help a contestant to get the above average scores.
This is my opinion, and I don't attend contests to eat and return home with dinner. I enjoy the bbq community and it is my way of staying connected in a constructive way.
