My experience with that subject is limited right now but...one cook I talked to, uses a pellet cooker and a stick burner. When I asked why, he says that he chooses between the two according to where he is cooking and what kind of flavor he wants to have at that place. I have only cooked on a cheap charcoal and my stick burner but I think there is a fairly noticable taste difference in the two, even with too many wood chips thrown on with the charcoal cooker (something I know i have done plenty of times). To me, the allowance of gas or electric elements, takes away more of the expertise (and hard work) of heating the pit and puts more focus on flavoring and doneness.
