Some of you knew our friend John M. Hopkins of KCBS, MIM & CBBQA fame had been pretty sick and on the liver transplant list.
We went out to Dickey's for some BBQ in March and he told me they took him off of the transplant list due to the cancer spreading to other organs and in his blood. He was in pretty bad shape then but still ate more BBQ than me.
They put him on a chemo pill which gave him a terrible reaction and put him in the emergency room/hospital for 3 days.
He decided not to take the chemo pill and go for quality of life with his remaining time.
John was a great ambassador for BBQ. He was a KCBS Rep, KCBS Master Judge, KCBS Certified BBQ Judge Instructor, Memphis In May Judge, and was President and on Board of Directors of California BBQ Association... the man knew his way around a rib.
John was a major force in the development of CBBQA, going back to when it was the Southern California BBQ Association (SCBBQA).
John (and Gene) were the only CBBJ Instructors in California for a loooooooong time and helped train the majority of the first batches of judges for California.
John was there to serve a help the growth of BBQ in California when help was needed and acted as KCBS Rep for numerous contests.
Just found out our friend passed June 27, 2014. Below is the article I read a little while ago that confirmed our friend has moved along.
Give him a thought and a prayer, he was one of the good guys.
