I know that you will always find people who have different views on this subject but generally speaking six months to a year. I have seen people say they use fresh wood with good results but it molds easy. You don't want the wood to be soft, have mold on it or looks like it is rotten. If you keep the wood dry it will stay good for years. if you have any other questions I will try to answer them for you.
