It was in October, 2003 at the Mandalay Heating Up The Bay contest in Las Vegas.
Everyone was very serious about this contest. It was one of the biggest money contests at that time.
I don't think any of the teams were doing their normal indulging/partying until after all the categories had been turned in.
There were 87 teams and "Uncle Earnie's Riverside Inn" had a pretty good contest:
Overall = 13th
Pork = 9th
Ribs = 9th
Anything Butt = 6th
Pellet Envy took Grand Champ with Mad Momma & The Kids taking Reserve.
Robin Leach of "Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous" was emceeing the awards.
Mr. Leach didn't know Jack about BBQ or KCBS scoring. He kept referring to "Perfect 10" as the goal for perfection...
Well, seems lots of folks had started the party part of the contest after the last turn-ins and Earnie and others started correcting Mr. Leach from the audience.
Leach and Uncle Earnie really started going at it with Earnie being far more funnier than Leach.
For some reason Leach was also giving a lot of the teams going up on stage a hard time including Uncle Earnie and also Amy from Mad Momma.
At one point I thought either Uncle Earnie or Amy from Mad Momma was going to drop Leach... he was lucky he got out of there in one piece.
The organizer, Arlie Bragg had the good sense not to bring Leach back for the next year's contest in 2004 and handled the emceeing himself.
Anyone that cooked that contest remembers how funny Uncle Earnie was in his go arounds with Leach. Uncle Earnie won by several K.O.'s.
Thank you Michelle and Uncle Earnie (aka John Earnest) for all the fun times.
