Yo Mike, My experience with cottonwood is this. The wood is very high in moisture content. It will dry out, and when it does dry out it will burn very fast. There is a small time frame when the wood does have enough moisture to make good stove or fireplace wood, but it isn't worth the effort when other woods are more available. That weird grain pattern you referred to makes splitting that wood rather difficult too. That stuff is even hard to burn in a bonfire.
