Fifteen years ago, the KCBS officials had concerns about running out of room at the Royal complex for more teams. I made the suggestion then that they move the contest to the Truman Sports Complex. They thought I was nuts. I told them my sanity had nothing to do with the issue.....

As much as it was "my idea" to move the AR to the Sports Complex, I still had mixed emotions about moving the contest. I have spent over two months of my life sleeping on that parking lot. I have said I wanted my ashes scattered there. That big lot was home to me. Having spent the last 25 years vending inside the stadiums and partying in the lot after the games, the Truman Sports Complex was home to me as well.

The AR committee did a good job of keeping me close the neighbors I have had for the last 15 years at the Royal. There were some bugs and problems with the move, but this was to be expected and I had no major complaints about the new site.

Now I have major issues with this new move. I competed at the inaugural Great American BBQ 'Fest years ago and that was NOT a fun time. The teams were required to stay there three days and the weather was 100F+ the whole time. There were no shower facilities and the access to water was limited. It was very difficult to access the stadium. I swore I would never return to that place.

I have been saying this for several years now. The AR contest is no longer so much about the teams as it is for a fund raiser for the American Royal Association. More teams mean more money for the Association. Our team has been competing there for 28 years and we only get four free passes to enter the contest. The rest of our teammates have to pay to get in the gate for a contest that we pay hundreds of dollars to enter.

I always wanted to say that I competed in the AR 30 years. My wish may not come true.

Crying in my beer,
