Does anyone have techniques for removing the "game" taste from deer to be smoked on the grill?

Thanks.

My mother used to take the deer meat and put it in a pot of water with a bit of baking soda in it. I don't know how much she used to put in. She would then boil it and soon a "black scum" would show up on top of the water. When that happened it was ready to be cooked.

I just talked to a big time hunter here in the office. He is hunting all the time. With dear meat to get the game taste he puts the meat in a pan and pour "Wishbone Italian Dressing" over it and allows it to marinate over night.
