Smaller comps or cook with a team.

I am very interested in bbq competitions but just don't have the funds to jump right into KCBS. Is there any other competitions that are less expensive or smaller events? Where are they listed? If not, are there any teams that would let a guy help to learn what goes into doing a competition? If I were to form my own team, how does that work? Do the team members pool money to compete? Who owns the equipment and such? Lot of questions lol! Thanks for any help.
