This was basically the situation I was in a few years back. I did not have the logistical means to field a team that travels far from home, which is in south Louisiana. What I found was to consider other sanctioning bodies. In my area, that makes a big difference. Most state championship contests here in Louisiana have registration fees of $150 or less. For the price of two KCBS events, I can now cook at three more of these less expensive contests. If available, try to look for contests sanctioned by other organizations. Price is important. I've been part of the KCBS scene since 2003. However, we know KCBS contests are expensive. I'd suggest start small with a local contest or two and build up from there.
