Back in the last century, around 1999, I found this forum. I was trying to decide which cooker to buy. I wanted something that burned charcoal and wood that would run all night without having to tend the fire for six to eight hours. Back in the days of yore on this forum, there was an intense rivalry between the eggers and the metalheads. I had considered buying an egg as my egghead friends were very convincing that if I bought a WSM, it would eventually rust out. I thought this was utter nonsense as I had used Weber products for years and had never seen one rust to a point of making the cooker non-functional. I wound up buying two WSMs that year.
I guess all those eggers were right after all. Two years ago, both of my WSMs that had set outside and unprotected from the rain, needed to be repaired. The bolt holes on that attach the legs to the base had rusted out. I fixed this by putting a large washer on each side of the base to cover the holes. This worked fine until this past winter. The holes are now large enough that I will have to replace both bases. I guess 17 years of usage is not too bad, but my egghead friends were right; a WSM will eventually rust out.............
Thanks again to all of the sponsors and participants on this forum!
