Unfortunately your photo was not posted, so nobody here has an idea of what your idea is.

I have never built a smoker, so I feel 'not qualified' to specifically answer your question. However, if you scroll down to the bottom of the bbq forum home page (http://www.rbjb.com/rbjb/rbjbboard/) you will find a link to ‘BBQ Forum Search Engine’ into which you can enter/search for “build’ and plenty of information should come up thru which you might get ideas.

Seriously...use the search engine I noted above...there is a treasure trove of information contained within...however it will take work to sift thru everything if you feel like chasing it, and it will well be worth the chase.

Having said all that, I have a few comments...
You mention 'duct work' which in my minds' eye is a thin (almost sheet metal like) material...most smokers are a heavier material (.090" minimum thick for the cheaper models, much thicker for commercial models)

Ductwork?...hopefully not galvanized...google 'galvanic poisoning'.

And finally, if the material is THIN, I would imagine it would be prone to warping and/or premature burnout/rustout.

Good Luck
