Fireplace cooking in Silicon Valley

This will challenge any weird question asked in awhile. I am remolding my kitchen & family room. Regretfully, I agreed to do this with all local permits. Today it came back to bite me. The inspector says according to county law I must convert my wood burning fireplace to gas or electric. I'm involved in challenging this but want to have a fall back. As I understand it, you can use wood as a fuel source for cooking. Here's my question, outside of hanging pots over the fire, does anyone know of an insert or other device for cooking food in a fireplace?
